Oh what a day it was, sun was shining, beautiful weather, spring in full swing, and I was inside all day watching as my deck was torn apart by one challenger after another. Since this year's tournament occurred during the school year, I was the only one close enough to make it back to play, so I called in a little assistance from Benji on making a deck that would do well. Unfortunately this was not my year. This was also the first time the tournament was played as a state by state system instead of regionally, but that's not much consolation when you live in the same state as the 1999 world champion, runner up, and 1st place team. I had some really tough opponents, and faced some powerful decks. My first round I had my outpost and HQ's swallowed up by Black Hole very quickly. I played last year's regional champ in round two, who was playing a deck similar to mine. His was a heck of a lot more effective in the long run than mine, and I ended up getting shut out up to that point. I didn't catch a problem with my deck until round three and by then I was in trouble as it was. I did manage to pull off a win by toasting a ship loaded with tons of people after a good dilemma combo paid off. Another game I had the misfortune of losing only by points eared by Mandarin Baliff transfer, so all in all, it didn't go great, but it was still a fun day of gaming. Congrats to Mike Harrington, who won the Minnesota state title. Hope you do as well this year as in '99.
